When animals are exposed to cancer-causing substances, the group that was fed these tocopherols in their diet had fewer and smaller tumors,? Yang said in a news commentary. ?When cancer cells were injected into mice these tocopherols also slowed down the development of tumors.?
The finding is important and good news for understanding how nutrients from food can help fight disease. The new study shows vitamin E in the diet might help protect from lung, prostate, colon and breast cancer.

News media around the world have reported on the landslide victory of Myanmar?s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, who won seats in parliament in a by-election.

Last year, after I had the privilege of visiting with Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon through a mutual friend, I found that people not only adore her but also respect her as a symbol of a freer Myanmar (Burma). A taxi driver and our guide, as well as a server at a restaurant, tucked away a small photograph of her in their shirt pockets.
The recent progress toward freedom made in Myanmar reminded me of this statement by Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Monitor. She wrote: ?Thoughts unspoken are not unknown to the divine Mind. Desire is prayer....? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 1).
The Burmese people?s desire to exercise basic human rights, such as the right to think independently and express ideas without being intimidated, or to have enough food and education, have been bubbling within them, though these desires have not always been articulated.
As history has shown, such basic desires cannot be hidden or left dormant. People will find a vehicle through which to carry out their purpose and finally accomplish what is good for humanity. When desire is coupled with right motives, we can receive power beyond ourselves. And perhaps it is the meek in heart who are ready to let that power beyond themselves lead.
Furthermore, this sentence in Science and Health gives us the right perspective on how the meek or even a child can lead the way: ?Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts, even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose in order that the purpose may appear? (p. 506).
It sometimes appears that the power to lead a movement lies in a particular person. But the real power comes from a higher source ? what we call God, unconditional Love and undivided Truth. And the birth of Christ Jesus, the great healer and teacher, was an answer to people?s desire to be freed from physical and mental limitation. Divine Mind continues to reveal the God-given freedom that we already have.
Three of history?s great leaders ? Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Aung San Suu Kyi ? are from three different faith backgrounds, yet they have one thing in common: the fearlessness that comes from forgetting ?self? and serving meekly, day after day, for a greater purpose.
Harking back to the idea that ?desire is prayer,? it may be that these leaders are the answers to people?s desire to change and grow. How important it is, then, to pray individually and collectively for the betterment of humanity.
The Burmese people have taken a significant step toward freedom. Behind ?this lady,? as Aung San Suu Kyi is known in Myanmar, is a much bigger force. The desire to see justice and to achieve the basic rights to learn, express, and excel will benefit the entire world. We can all be aware of it and add our prayers so that everyone in need can move forward with patience, meekness, and strength.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - How much is that college degree really worth? That depends on your major. It turns out that some undergraduate and graduate diplomas are worth a lot more during a lifetime of work.
In fact, the difference in earnings between one major and another can be more than 300 percent, according to recent research from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce. Researchers there crunched U.S. Census data looking at 171 majors in 15 categories.

Anthony Carnevale, the center's director, explains why students need to pay attention to their earnings potential when picking a major.
Why is it important to get a college degree?
Access to college is what distinguishes the middle class from low-income Americans. People with at least some college education stay in the middle class or move up.
Over the next decade, there will be 31 million job openings that will require at least some form of education - 9 million newly created jobs along with 22 million jobs from baby boomers who are retiring. Roughly two-thirds of those jobs will require some form of education or formal training beyond high school.
After the recession of 1981 to 1982, what you took in college largely determined what you'd become in life.
Break it down financially.
The salary premium for college grads continues to rise while the number of jobs for those with just a high school diploma is shrinking fast.
We always knew that people with an associate degree earned less than those with a B.A., on average. That is still true. The difference is about $500,000 to $600,000 throughout a career. Over the course of a lifetime, a college degree is worth an extra $1 million in earnings ... (over a high school diploma).
It's even better if you have a professional degree, like accounting. You will make $3.7 million during your career, on average. A doctor will earn $6 million.
But it's tough to find a job in an area like architecture right now, which is tied to the housing market. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates with degrees in architecture is 13.9 percent.
What's your advice to students who are trying to pick a major?
If you become a petroleum engineer, you'll earn $90,000 out of college. If you become social worker, you will make $35,000. The differences are huge. The question is, what are you prepared for and what do you want to do? What are your interests? What are your abilities?
Do your homework before picking a major. When it comes to job prospects and compensation, not all college degrees are created equal.
Are there other keys to financial success?
Professionals like engineers, scientists and even financial types tend to have two careers. First, they have a technical career - they are a chemist, engineer, biologist, bank analyst. But then they have a second career as a manager.
If you work in a job that's more technical, the odds that you will become a manager are much higher than if you become a schoolteacher. I can tell you, it's good to be the boss. You make a lot more money when you are in charge.
How does graduate school factor into the earnings mix?
If you study chemistry, engineering or other technical trades, you are crazy if you don't go to grad school because the jump in income is really huge - it can be as much as $500,000 to $1 million over a career. Arts students also need graduate degrees because it is the only way you can teach or work in a museum.
Right now, the total amount of student loan debt exceeds $1 trillion, which is more than credit card debt. How can you tell if a college degree is worth it if you have to rack up massive loans?
That's a tricky question. If you go into a profession like nursing and have $200,000 in debt, it's worth it because you will still make $3 million during your career.
The issue is coming up with the cash. You need to compare the cost and the benefit. Even the expensive colleges cost only a fraction of their ultimate payoff. In fact, one could argue that the only choice more expensive than going to college is not going to college.
So is a liberal arts degree still valuable?
Only 10 percent of degrees now are in the liberal arts. Educators are very concerned that the economic value of a college degree will crowd out Shakespeare. It still makes sense go to an elite four-year liberal arts college and attend a graduate or professional school. And if you go to a place like Harvard, it's like a big summer camp. You can go there for four years, learn a lot, make great connections, and develop as a human being. But then you will need to go to graduate school to focus and prepare for an occupation.
There are more women in college today than men. So why aren't women out-earning men?
There is a huge gender bias in all this stuff. The jobs that pay are dominated by males. Even though 40 percent of math majors in college are female, they become schoolteachers. Men that major in math go into technical areas.
How do your peers view your research?
The classics people at Georgetown walk the other way when they see me coming. Their view is that this commercializes learning. They are right.
Maybe colleges do not want to be training foot soldiers for capitalism. But, by and large, whether they like it or not, they are selling jobs to students.

Vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle enters development
ARLINGTON, Va.Part helicopter, part airplane, the Office of Naval Research (ONR)-sponsored Flexrotor vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enters the next development phase April 30 in delivering improved maritime surveillance capability.
The contract awarded today is for the flight controls component. During this phase, Aerovel Corp. will advance Flexrotor's capability with an upgraded propulsion system to transition from vertical to cruising flight and to land in crosswinds and high winds. The aircraft's first major milestone was in August 2011, when it successfully transitioned from horizontal to vertical flight and back again.
The small UAV features a unique design. It has an oversized propeller with helicopter-like controls for vertical takeoff and landing and the wings of a conventional aircraft. The goal is that it will take off vertically, cruise efficiently horizontally and then land vertically.

Taking up less than one-half the space needed by other UAVs, Flexrotor would give Sailors compact, ship-launched, eye-in-the-sky capability. Additionally, it could stay airborne for a longer period of time. Thus, Flexrotor could help meet the Navy's perpetual need for more and better maritime surveillance.
A vertical takeoff/landing craft requires a complex propulsion and flight control system. The propeller needs to be big enough to provide sufficient lift to take off vertically, yet small enough to be efficient while in horizontal flight. The flight controls must provide powerful and precise control in vertical takeoffs and landings and efficient, low-drag control in forward flight. Perfecting both the rotor and other flight capabilities requires a constant balancing act among power, efficiency and weight, and this is what Tadd McGeer, Flexrotor's inventor, is working out during phase II.
Since test flights to date have occurred with light winds, Aerovel will begin testing in windy conditions, gradually increasing the aircraft's operating envelope.
Another aspect of the program, sponsored by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, is to develop an autonomous servicing capability. Aerovel is creating an Automatic Servicing Platform that would serve as launch and landing pad, as well as maintenance bay. This could be useful when deploying the Flexrotor to remote areas, as the aircraft could use this all-in-one hub without needing human assistance.
The platform could be beneficial for a special operations application of remotely siting a UAV. "[The special ops personnel] like the idea of not exposing where they are when they need to launch and recover one," Kinzer said. "They could put it on a mountaintop somewhere and just leave it to do surveillance." There are also potential applications to Arctic surveillance and weather reporting for the Navy and other organizations, such as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle enters development
ARLINGTON, Va.Part helicopter, part airplane, the Office of Naval Research (ONR)-sponsored Flexrotor vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enters the next development phase April 30 in delivering improved maritime surveillance capability.
The contract awarded today is for the flight controls component. During this phase, Aerovel Corp. will advance Flexrotor's capability with an upgraded propulsion system to transition from vertical to cruising flight and to land in crosswinds and high winds. The aircraft's first major milestone was in August 2011, when it successfully transitioned from horizontal to vertical flight and back again.
The small UAV features a unique design. It has an oversized propeller with helicopter-like controls for vertical takeoff and landing and the wings of a conventional aircraft. The goal is that it will take off vertically, cruise efficiently horizontally and then land vertically.

TAMPA -- OK, Mitt Romney, it?s time to step up for Florida.
Florida Republicans revived your candidacy in the Jan. 31 primary. They?ve donated more than $7 million to your 2012 presidential campaign. They?re hosting your nomination bash at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. And without Florida?s 29 electoral votes, it?s nearly impossible for you to win the White House.
So now Florida Republicans are expecting the presumptive nominee to nudge the Republican National Committee into easing off Florida?s penalties for breaking party rules by holding a January primary. They want at least 99 Floridians seated at the Aug. 27-30 Republican National Convention in Tampa, though the RNC has lopped Florida?s delegation in half to 50.
?We?ve asked the Romney people to go to the RNC,? said Peter Feaman, a Republican national committeeman from Boca Raton. ?If we can?t have all our delegates, can you at least seat all of us and allow us in the convention??
No other swing state has as many electoral votes as Florida. With that mega battleground status comes a hefty sense of entitlement, which may explain why so many party activists gathered in Tampa for the state GOP?s quarterly meeting this weekend sounded utterly confident they ultimately will escape the strict penalties promised by the RNC.
On Saturday, party leaders approved a full slate of 99 delegates and 96 alternates, two from each of the state?s 25 congressional districts and the rest at-large choices by the party chairman. If the RNC sticks to its penalties, the state party in June or July will revise the list to designate the 50 official delegates.
?The reality is Mitt Romney is not going to have Florida be penalized. We?re the battleground of all battleground states,? predicted A.J. Matthews, a state committeeman from Hillsborough and a delegate representing congressional District 11.
Orange County GOP Chairman Lew Oliver agreed: ?There?s an expectation that Mitt Romney will fix it. I would guess what they do is allow 99 people to be credentialed and be able to go into the convention but not necessarily cast a vote.?
That?s what happened four years ago, when the state party also violated the officially sanctioned primary calendar by setting Florida?s primary in January. Ultimately all 114 Florida delegates had prime seats in the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., but half of them were designated non-voting ?honored guests.?
The Florida GOP activists? expectations for the Tampa convention put former Massachusetts Gov. Romney in an awkward position. To press the RNC to indemnify Florida is sure to antagonize party activists from other states who complied with the rules.
The Romney campaign declined to comment on the matter Saturday.
Even if Romney does press the RNC, there are no guarantees that the presumptive nominee will succeed in persuading it to back off Florida, which is a now a two-time offender.
?The rules committee has made it clear the rules will be enforced,? RNC spokesman Matt Connelly said when asked about the potential for mercy on Florida?s delegation.
Florida Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry said he is optimistic that a compromise will be reached.
?Penalizing the grassroots because of something the Legislature did doesn?t make sense. (A legislative-led committee set the primary date.) We need these people in the trenches as involved and engaged and motivated as possible,?? said Curry, noting that he continues to make his case to the RNC. ?If you push on a wall long enough eventually you get through, or you find a way to go around it or over it. But I can?t tell you it?s moved much so far.?
Republican leaders in the Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott knew of the potential for penalties when they set an early primary, but they said it was much more important to ensure America?s biggest battleground state had influence on picking the nominee. Romney handily won Florida?s primary, though the bruising campaign continued on for more than two months before he was acknowledged as the inevitable nominee.
Scott on Saturday predicted Florida will be accommodated for one reason: ?You have to win Florida to win the presidency.?
But Sharon Day, national committeewoman from Fort Lauderdale and co-chair of the RNC, wasn?t as optimistic. ?I never say never, but it will be tough.?
