Robot spider may soon weave its own web

5 hrs.

If robots eventually take over the world, we?ll only have ourselves to blame as we sit trapped inside cocoon-like webs spun by bio-inspired robot spiders.

Researchers at the?MIT Media Lab have already built the first generation of the machine, which IDG News recently brought to our attention.?

In its current iteration, the robot spider knows the position of the hooks and pegs in its surroundings and uses them to craft a pre-programmed design.

Eventually, though, the team wants the robot to be autonomous, IDG explains. That means the robot would sense where the hooks and pegs are on its own and use them to make its own design.

While this ability might have practical applications in manufacturing or construction in a human-dominated world, should robots gain the edge over us, we could be imprisoned in high-tech spider webs.
